Job Description:
During academic year 2009-2010, the Center will deliver and support a range of international academic programs both on and off campus, including the Presidential International Service Learning and International Visiting Scholar Programs and a range of overseas degree offerings. We are seeking an intern who is highly motivated, creative, and able to work with diverse groups of individuals on a variety of tasks. Interns can expect to work closely with the Director and other Center staff to welcome and collaborate with international visitors as well as to support other efforts in which the Center is involved. This internship offers the possibility of continuing into summer 2010, when Wheelock College will welcome a large number of undergraduate learners from Singapore to the Boston campus for an intensive Summer Immersion Program. Interns will have a unique and exciting opportunity to interact with the visiting students in various ways, according to their skills and interests. Responsibilities: • Provides support to existing international degree programs and learners • Fulfills general office duties • Composes and prepares documents such as program outlines and announcements of new products and projects • Prepares daily correspondence • Assists in welcoming and providing the logistics for visiting international delegations, including Presidential International Visiting Scholars • Conducts research on potential new program locations and sources of support for international programs • Assists in the planning and preparation for the Summer Immersion Program • During Summer 2010, accompanies students to lectures, workshops, site visits, cultural events, and other places of interest in and around Boston and creates promotional materials based on the students’ experiences at Wheelock College.
Requirements:
Preferred Qualifications and Experience: • Strong writing and editing skills • Exemplary communication skills • Attention to detail • An interest in international/cross-cultural relations and education • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously • Prior study, work, or volunteer abroad experience or interest • Excellent computer skills, experience with word-processing, online research, and programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel • Appreciation for and understanding of diversity • A high level of energy and enthusiasm • Ability to work independently or in a team setting Learning Outcomes: • Explore the field of international higher education • Meet and collaborate with a diverse group of international students, scholars, and other professionals • Contribute to hands-on program development • Gain a deeper understanding of cultural issues affecting education
Additional Information:
Interns are expected to work at least 20 hours per week over the course of the fall 2009 and semester, from October through December, with the possibility of continuing into spring and summer 2010. Competitive compensation is available. Appropriate supervision will be provided so that this position could count toward service learning, internship, or other required professional experience at the university level.
