Job Description:
The EMC (Educator Mentor Corps) is a new volunteer initiative of the Wheelock College Aspire Institute that mobilizes skilled, experienced educators to prepare, inspire and retain those entering the field. EMC mentors work with new teachers in the Greater Boston area over their first few years in the classroom towards three goals: - To enhance the professional skills of new teachers
- To improve new teacher retention
- To promote public policy that fosters quality community service in support of education.
How are EMC mentors affiliated with and supported by Wheelock? Once selected, mentors serve as Wheelock Educators-in-Residence, and become part of a professional learning community with access to free college and continuing education courses, and other campus benefits. Educators-in-Residence can also serve as guest lecturers, develop their own workshops and participate in research and policy initiatives.
Requirements:
Who is an ideal EMC mentor? We are looking for experienced Wheelock alumni educators who have an interest and passion in mentoring new teachers. Specifically, we are looking for alumni who: - Have 10 or more years of teaching experience
- Are committed to working with teacher-mentees 1-2 days per week over the school year
- Live within or can travel to the greater Boston area regularly
- May be retired, near retiring age, or working part-time
- Can participate in a learning community, meeting with other Corps members, BTR induction staff, Wheelock faculty and staff from host schools 1-2 days per month over the school year and 3-5 days over the summer.

Where do EMC mentors go? The first cohort of EMC mentors will be matched with new teachers in Boston, in collaboration with the Boston Teacher Residency program and the Boston Public Schools. Host school sites will integrate EMC mentors as professional colleagues, including them in school-wide professional development and instructional improvement efforts.
