Job Description:

The Teacher Bound: The Upward Bound Program is connected with Wheelock College. The program serves 50 urban high school students from the Boston, Massachusetts area. Our mission is to prepare high school students for college acceptance, admission, and academic excellence. Through our classes, activities, and our mentoring program we give the students the support they need. The students, the Teacher Bound Scholars will learn about teaching in Urban America and discuss their ideas. They will also be able to interact with faculty and students to experience that college is an accepting and accessible place for them.

Teacher Bound, the Upward Bound Program is looking for volunteer mentors. Each mentor will be individually matched with a high school student, one of our Teacher Bound Scholars. Mentors must meet and communicate (via e-mail or phone) with their mentees for at least 5 hours per month for at least 1 year. They will support their mentee in a variety of ways, including academically, socially, and emotionally. Mentors may help with academics, hang out and talk, or take their mentees to the museum, zoo, sports game, etc.

Requirements:

Preferred Skills/ Experience:

  • Great interpersonal skills 
  • Patience
  • Past experience working with urban adolescent youth
  • College experience and/or knowledge of the college admission process a plus 

Mentors will be required to attend a training before meeting with their mentee as well as clear a background check. People of diverse backgrounds encouraged to apply.
